Russians most often paid with Mir cards at supermarkets (1.4 bln transactions). It is remarkable that the share of transactions at supermarkets is ramping down: formerly, it was half of the total, while currently, it is less. This means that cashless payments are gaining ground in more and more spheres, and the COVID-19 pandemic contributed thereto in a way. As in 2019, cafes and restaurants ranked second (about 6,5% of the total) in the number of transactions, while public transport ranked third (about 5,5% of the total), being placed No. 5 in 2019. Transport promotions contributed to such a significant growth in the number of transactions, which Mir Payment System held in many Russian cities. In 2020, Russians spent an average of RUB 597 in pharmacies, RUB 1,839 in closing stores, RUB 1,166 on cosmetics, RUB 154 on taxis, RUB 4,502 on hotel accommodation, RUB 2,444 on train tickets, and RUB 9,140 on air tickets. The constituent entities of the Russian Federation, where national payment cards were most frequently used, included Moscow (684 mln transactions), Moscow Region (246 mln transactions), Saint Petersburg (184 mln transactions), Sverdlovsk Region (109 mln transactions), and Krasnodar Territory (100 mln transactions). The top five did not change YoY. It should be noted that at 2020 year-end, over 90 mln Mir cards were issued.
