Acceptance of Mir Cards Launched in Kyrgyzstan

3 April 2019

The national payment systems of Kyrgyzstan and Russia - Elcard and Mir - provide an opportunity to use Mir cards in the Kyrgyz Republic as part of the cross-system integration project.

Holders of Russian cards will be able to withdraw cash in ATMs and pay at POS-terminals branded with the Mir logo.

Under the project, the banks participating in Elcard payment system (BTA Bank, Rosinbank, Bank Bai-Tushum) have already connected their ATMs and are completing connection of POS-terminals to accept Mir cards. The other participants of the Kyrgyz national payment system, too, will gradually open their card acceptance networks to accept Russian cards.

VTB Bank (Russia) and BTA Bank (Kyrgyzstan) act as the settlement banks for cross-system transactions.

“Economic cooperation between our countries is developing rapidly. The project of integration of Mir and Elcard will be still another important step in cooperation between Russia and Kyrgyzstan in the financial sector. Every year, Russian citizens make over 200,000 trips to Kyrgyzstan*. We are sure that the start of acceptance of Mir cards in the Republic will simplify all familiar transactions for Mir cardholders on tourist and business trips”, comments Maxim Lazyrin, Business Director, NSPK (Mir payment system operator).

Ulan Zhamalidinov, Chairman of the Board, Interbank Processing Centre (Elcard payment system operator): “For banks that participate in Elcard national payment system, this project provides an additional opportunity to arrange the acceptance of Mir cards without the need for individual certification projects. Since the project launch, 177 Mir card transactions for 317,950.54 soms, have been performed. Moreover, in the future, our citizens will be able to obtain Elcard cards that will enable the cardholders to use them in the Mir infrastructure and to transfer money from Mir to Elcard”.
